W 1916 roku, Kentucky Owl zostało zamknięte z powodu decyzji władz federalnych, a całe zapasy whiskey zostały skonfiskowane przez rząd i zabrane do tajemniczego magazynu, który w niewyjaśniony sposób ostatecznie spłonął wraz z całym inwentarzem.

Kentucky Owl Confiscated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey debiutował w 2019 roku i jest hołdem dla straconych okazji i beczek, które rząd odebrał prapradziadkowi założyciela przed wprowadzeniem prohibicji i których nigdy więcej nie widziano. Firma nie ujawnia, które destylarnie z Kentucky dostarczyły bourbony, będące składnikami tej edycji. Zabutelkowano go z mocą 48,2% vol.

Smak: oleisty, słodko-wytrawny, dębina, zwęglone drewno, pomarańcze, czekolada z kokosem, napar z czarnej herbaty, wilgotny tytoń, skóra, cygaro, czerwone jabłka, masło, tosty maślane, karmel lekko przypalony, laska wanilii, ciemny miód, pyłek pszczeli, zbalansowany, soczysty, intensywny, nieco ziołowy, drzewny, syrop klonowy, krówki, czereśnie (pestki), wiśnie w czekoladzie, kawa, brzoskwinie, bułeczki cynamonowe, kardamon, orzechy

Aromat jest złożony i bardzo lotny. Od razu dostajemy informację, że będzie się tutaj sporo działo. Początkowo wyczuwalne są solidne pokłady dębiny wraz z nutami palonego karmelu, kakao oraz palonego ziarna. Już po chwili dołączają nuty tytoniu i skóry, ale także zapach prażonej kukurydzy czy też popcornu w karmelu. Gdy chwilę pooddycha robi się nieco słodsza. Dostajemy nuty lekko przypalonego masła, czekolady kokosowej, ale także pojawiają się owoce takie jak wiśnie, czerwone jabłko oraz pomarańcze. Nie brakuje również nut prażonych orzechów, migdałów oraz lekkiego powiewu świeżości w postaci listka mięty. Alkohol jest bardzo ładnie wkomponowany w całość i na tym etapie zupełnie nie przeszkadza.

W smaku zdecydowanie oleista i słodko-wytrawna. Na starcie oczywiście sporo nut zwęglonej dębiny, ale również nut pomarańczy i czekoladek z nadzieniem kokosowym. Początkowo, smak dominują nieco cięższe nuty skóry, tytoniu i przypraw korzennych, w tym nuty kardamonu i cynamonu. Kolejny łyk to nieco więcej nut lekko przypalonego masła i karmelu wraz z laską wanilii i nutą ciemnego miodu. Aktywują się również kolejne owoce takie jak czerwone jabłka, wiśnie w czekoladzie, brzoskwinie. Jest również odrobinę ziołowa, pojawiają się nuty pyłku pszczelego, ale odnajduję także nuty orzechów i syropu klonowego. Ponownie alkohol jest bardzo dobrze wkomponowany w całość. Gdy wróciłem do niej po chwili, otrzymałem posmak długo parzonej czarnej herbaty a także nuty kawy. Sporo się tutaj dzieje, co pozwala nam spędzić przy kieliszku nieco więcej czasu, niż wstępnie można było założyć.

Finisz jest dość długi, wypełniony nutami dębiny. Nadal sporo jest również przypraw (goździki, cynamon, pieprz) a także nut ziołowych. Gdzieś przebija się odrobina słodyczy, ale zdecydowanie na tym etapie wyczuwamy jeszcze więcej gorzkich nut. Kakao oraz gorzka czekolada, ale także nuty skórzane i tytoń.

Podsumowując, Kentucky Owl Confiscated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, to bourbon, którego chciałbym móc pić jako daily dram. Niestety, muszę trochę ponarzekać, gdyż nie należy on do tanich, przynajmniej w moim odczuciu wartości pieniądza. Nie oznacza to jednak, że nie jest wart zakupu… po prostu gdyby był tańszy, mógłbym kupić więcej butelek 😉 Ale tak na poważnie, abstrahując już od ceny, to jest to produkt bardzo dobrze przygotowany. Trudno jest tutaj przyczepić się do czegokolwiek innego poza wspomnianą ceną. Mamy balans zarówno w aromacie i smaku. Czas spędzony w kieliszku działa tylko na plus, dając możliwość odkrycia kolejnych warstw. Zdecydowanie nie czujemy w nim młodości, słabej jakości destylatu czy też innych nieprzyjemności, które często można odnaleźć w młodych bourbonach. Jest on zapewne przeznaczony dla nieco bardziej wymagającego podniebienia, choćby dlatego, że ma cięższy charakter i zdecydowanie niewiele jest w nim słodyczy, która być może, dość często przyciąga konsumentów do degustacji właśnie bourbona. To trochę taka „łatka”, że bourbon musi być słodki. Wcale tak nie jest i to właśnie te, znacznie wytrawniejsze, pokazują to piękno… a przynajmniej takie jest moje osobiste zdanie. Confiscated to bardzo dobry bourbon i polecam go z czystym sumieniem. Jeśli będziecie mieli okazję go spróbować, nie przepuśćcie tej okazji… po prostu.

Kentucky Owl Distillery is a distillery that was founded in 1879 in Mercer County, Kentucky, by Charles Mortimer Dedman.

In 1916, the Kentucky Owl was closed due to a federal decision, and its entire stock of whiskey was confiscated by the government and taken to a mysterious warehouse that mysteriously eventually burned down along with all its inventory.

In 2014, Dixon Dedman, the founder’s great-grandson, revived the brand, and three years later the rights to it were purchased by S.P.I Group.

Kentucky Owl Confiscated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey debuted in 2019 and pays homage to missed opportunities and barrels that the government took from the founder’s great-great-grandfather before Prohibition and were never seen again. The company does not disclose which Kentucky distilleries supplied the bourbons used in this edition. It was bottled at 48.2% vol.

Taste: oily, sweet and dry, oak, charred wood, oranges, chocolate with coconut, black tea infusion, moist tobacco, leather, cigar, red apples, butter, buttery toast, slightly burnt caramel, vanilla pod, dark honey, pollen bee, balanced, juicy, intense, slightly herbal, woody, maple syrup, fudge, cherries (stones), cherries in chocolate, coffee, peaches, cinnamon buns, cardamom, nuts

Finish: vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, oak, cloves, herbs, bitterness, tobacco, leather, cocoa

The aroma is complex and very volatile. We immediately get information that there will be a lot going on here. Initially, solid layers of oak are felt along with notes of roasted caramel, cocoa and roasted grain. After a while, notes of tobacco and leather appear, but also the smell of roasted corn or caramel popcorn. After breathing for a while, it becomes a bit sweeter. We get notes of slightly burnt butter, coconut chocolate, but also fruits such as cherries, red apple and oranges. There are also notes of roasted nuts, almonds and a light breath of freshness in the form of a mint leaf. The alcohol is very nicely incorporated into the whole and does not interfere at all at this stage.

The taste is definitely oily and sweet-dry. At the start, of course, there are a lot of notes of charred oak, but also notes of orange and chocolates with coconut filling. Initially, the taste is dominated by slightly heavier notes of leather, tobacco and spices, including notes of cardamom and cinnamon. The next sip brings some more notes of slightly burnt butter and caramel along with vanilla pod and a hint of dark honey. Other fruits such as red apples, chocolate-covered cherries and peaches are also activated. It is also a bit herbal, there are notes of bee pollen, but I also find notes of nuts and maple syrup. Again, the alcohol is very well incorporated into the whole. When I returned to it after a while, I received the taste of long-brewed black tea and a hint of coffee. There’s a lot going on here, which allows us to spend a little more time with a glass than initially expected.

The finish is quite long, filled with oak notes. There are still a lot of spices (cloves, cinnamon, pepper) and herbal notes. There’s a bit of sweetness coming through somewhere, but we definitely feel even more bitter notes at this stage. Cocoa and dark chocolate, but also notes of leather and tobacco.

Overall, Kentucky Owl Confiscated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a bourbon I wish I could drink as a daily dram. Unfortunately, I have to complain a little because it is not cheap, at least in my opinion, value for money. This does not mean, however, that it is not worth buying… just if it was cheaper, I could buy more bottles 😉 But seriously, apart from the price, it is a very well-prepared product. It is difficult to fault anything else here apart from the mentioned price. We have a balance in both aroma and taste. The time spent in the glass only has a positive effect, giving you the opportunity to discover new layers. We definitely don’t feel young, low quality distillate or other unpleasant things that can often be found in young bourbons. It is probably intended for a slightly more demanding palate, if only because it has a heavier character and there is definitely little sweetness in it, which perhaps quite often attracts consumers to tasting bourbon. It’s a bit of a „patch” that bourbon has to be sweet. This is not the case at all and it is the much drier ones that show this beauty… or at least that is my personal opinion. Confiscated is a very good bourbon and I recommend it with a clear conscience. If you have the opportunity to try it, don’t miss it…
