W Boge, w północno-zachodniej Gotlandii, znajduje się grób Tjelvara, wrak statku który pojawił się w drugiej połowie epoki brązu. Według Gutasagan to właśnie tutaj Tjelvar, pierwszy człowiek na Gotlandii, zszedł na brzeg. Wtedy Gotlandia była jak zaczarowana i całymi dniami tonęła w morzu, by w nocy znów się budzić. Kiedy przybył Tjelvar, przyniósł ze sobą ogień, który złamał zaklęcie i wyspa przestała tonąć. Rzeczywistość stojąca za tą opowieścią jest kwestionowana, ale recenzowana dzisiaj whisky oparta jest na prawdziwym dziedzictwie z poprzednich edycji i początku nowej historii.

Tjelvar składa się z pięciu beczek drugiego napełnienia po bourbonie, z których trzy zawierały części z pierwszego butelkowania Isle of Lime, Shareholder 2016, Roma i Tjaukle.

Powodem powstania tych „części” był fakt, że w tamtym czasie gorzelnia posiadała mniejszy zbiornik do mieszania, który nie mógł zmieszać całej produkcji, co oznaczało, że trzeba było mieszać partiami, co z kolei powodowało powstawanie pozostałości po ostatnim mieszaniu.

Finisz: dębina, przyprawy korzenne, napar z czarnej herbaty, nieco pieprzu, kandyzowany imbir, cynamon, skórki pomarańczy

W aromacie, whisky jest żywa i lotna. Od razu pięknie unosi się zapach znad kieliszka. Początkowo, wiodącą nutą jest tutaj marcepan z dodatkiem czekolady oraz starte jabłka, ale także wyraźne nuty dębiny i przypraw korzennych. Jest umiarkowanie słodka, choć z czasem tej słodyczy nieco przybywa. Pojawiają się nuty miodowo-karmelowe, które łączą się z nutami owoców z puszki (brzoskwinie, morele), ale także wyczuwalne są owoce suszone, jak rodzynki. Te wspomniane owoce z puszki, powoli zaczynają przypominać zapach galaretki i pojawia się jeszcze nuta pomarańczy. Jeśli chodzi o przyprawy, to na pewno mamy tutaj nieco cynamonu, ziela angielskiego, ale także kandyzowany imbir i trochę pieprzu. Alkohol jest wyczuwalny, ale nie jest agresywny. Po czasie pojawia się jeszcze nuta mocnego naparu z czarnej herbaty oraz zapach drzewa cedrowego.

W smaku jest przyjemnie oleista, choć nieco pikantna. Od razu wyczuwalne jest połączenie nut owocowych, miodu oraz przypraw. Ponownie mamy tutaj owoce w syropie – brzoskwinie, morele, ale w mojej ocenie, prym wiodą słodko-gorzkie pomarańcze. Jest sporo przyjemnych nut dębiny, mamy nieco suszonych ziół, które z czasem przypominają wyczuwalny już wcześniej napar z czarnej herbaty lub napar z herbaty ziołowej. Wracają też nuty suszonych owoców, przede wszystkim rodzynki, suszone gruszki i suszone jabłko. Jest zbalansowana pod względem słodyczy, wyczuwalne są nuty laski wanilii oraz nieco karmelu. Wracając jeszcze do nut przypraw, odnajduję w niej kandyzowany imbir (cukierki imbirowe) oraz cynamon łączący się z jabłkiem. Nadal gdzieś w tle majaczy nuta marcepanu oraz nuty śmietankowe. Z czasem robi się nieco wytrawniejsza.

Finisz jest odrobinę pieprzny, rozgrzewający ale nie alkoholowy piekący. Na tym etapie odnajduję najwięcej przypraw korzennych (imbir i cynamon obecny jest cały czas) ale także wciąż towarzyszą mi nuty pomarańczy.

Podsumowując, Isle of Lime – Tjelvar 9yo, to whisky zbalansowana, o dobrej strukturze i wyrazista w smaku. Nie jest być może jakoś bardzo skomplikowana, ale zdecydowanie ma charakter i dobrze się ją pije. W skrócie, mógłbym ją podsumować jako połączenie miodowo-korzenno-pomarańczowo-drzewnych nut, które dopełnia słodycz wanilii a balansuje goryczka dębiny i gorzkich owoców. Jest w niej nieco przypraw ale nie są one bardzo intensywne, a alkohol jest zdecydowanie dobrze ukryty. Czuć też, że whisky nie jest już taka młoda, że jednak te minimum 9 lat spędzonych w beczce już nadały pewnej ogłady. Generalnie, nie jest to mój ulubiony profil whisky, ale tym razem, te przyprawy jakoś dobrze mi się połączyły z resztą i naprawdę miło spędziłem czas przy kieliszku tej whisky. Zdecydowanie warto jej spróbować.

English Version:

In Boge, in northwestern Gotland is Tjelvar’s grave, a shipwreck erected during the latter part of the Bronze Age. According to the Gutasagan, it was here that Tjelvar, the first human on Gotland, stepped ashore. Then Gotland was so enchanted that it sank into the sea in days to get up again at night. When Tjelvar came, he brought fire with him, which broke the spell and the island stopped sinking. The reality behind the tale is disputed, but this oak-aged whisky is based on a real legacy from previous releases and the beginning of a new story.

Tjelvar consists of five refill ex-bourbon casks where three of which contained parts of Isle of Lime first bottling, Shareholder 2016, Roma and Tjaukle.

The reason for these “parts” was that at the time the distillery had a smaller blending tank that could not mix the entire release, which meant that they had to mix in batches, which in turn created a residue after the last mix.

Let’s try it:

Nose: volatile, quite sweet, leading note of marzipan with the addition of chocolate, grated apples, oak, honey-caramel notes, black tea infusion, a bit of alcohol notes, dried fruits, dried apples, raisins in chocolate, orange jelly, peach-apricot jelly, creamy notes, some pepper and spices, allspice, cinnamon, cedarwood, candied ginger, fruits in syrup, maple syrup

Taste: oily, slightly spicy, fruity and honey, bittersweet oranges, apricots, peaches, honey with water, some spicy oak and spices, cinnamon, ginger, dried herbs, black tea, dried apples, raisins, dried orchard fruits, balanced sweetness, creamy notes, a bit of vanilla, traces of caramels, apple with cinnamon, ginger-herbal candies, dried pears, canned fruit

Finish: oak, spices, black tea infusion, some pepper, candied ginger, cinnamon, orange peel

In aroma, the whisky is lively and volatile. The aroma immediately wafts beautifully from the glass. Initially, the leading note is marzipan with chocolate and grated apples, but also clear notes of oak and spices. It is moderately sweet, although the sweetness increases a bit over time. There are honey and caramel notes combined with notes of canned fruit (peaches, apricots), but also dried fruits such as raisins are also noticeable. These canned fruits slowly start to resemble the smell of jelly and there is also a hint of orange. When it comes to spices, we definitely have some cinnamon and allspice, but also candied ginger and some pepper. The alcohol is noticeable but not aggressive. After some time, a note of strong black tea infusion and the smell of cedar wood appear.

The taste is pleasantly oily, although slightly spicy. The combination of fruity notes, honey and spices is immediately noticeable. We have fruit in syrup here again – peaches, apricots, but in my opinion, bittersweet oranges dominate. There are a lot of pleasant notes of oak, we have some dried herbs, which over time resemble the previously noticeable black tea or herbal tea infusion. Notes of dried fruit also return, especially raisins, dried pears and dried apple. It is balanced in terms of sweetness, with notes of vanilla pod and a bit of caramel. Coming back to the spice notes, I find candied ginger (ginger candies) and cinnamon combined with apple. There is still a note of marzipan and cream in the background. It gets a bit drier over time.

The finish is a bit peppery, warming but not alcoholic or burning. At this stage I find the most spices (ginger and cinnamon are present all the time), but I also still hear notes of orange.

To sum up, Isle of Lime – Tjelvar 9yo is a balanced whisky, with good structure and expressive taste. It may not be very complicated, but it definitely has character and is good to drink. In short, I could summarize it as a combination of honey-spicy-orange-woody notes, complemented by the sweetness of vanilla and balanced by the bitterness of oak and bitter fruits. There are some spices in it, but they are not very intense, and the alcohol is definitely well hidden. You can also feel that the whisky is not so young anymore, and that the minimum of 9 years spent in the cask have already given it a certain refinement. Generally, this is not my favourite whisky profile, but this time, these spices somehow combined well with the rest and I had a really nice time drinking a glass of this whisky. It’s definitely worth trying.
